The Koitajoki frontier river winds through the wilderness close to the Russian border. The Karu Frontier River Adventure is a canoeing trip featuring short hikes into the wilderness from the rest stops. In the uninhabited wilds of the easternmost parts of Finland, you can experience the grand scale of nature. There are old wilderness huts where you can stay the night free of charge. The Koitajoki flows through large open areas that are also home to bears, wolves, beavers and numerous birds.

Who is the expedition for:

The Karu Frontier River Adventure is for everyone who is interested in staying outdoors in various ways. During this four-day trip, you will learn or revise the most important bushcraft skills required under the guidance of professional and clear instructors. The adventure is also suitable for families with older children.

Meditative canoeing and short hikes set the pace of the trip.

During the expedition, you will learn:

  • The basics of canoeing

  • How to cook food over an open fire and use a portable stove

  • Food hygiene and storage

  • How to make different cooking equipment outdoors

  • What to do if you fall into water


The trek includes:

  • Canoe and lifejacket

  • One meal prepared over an open fire during the expedition

  • Transportation from the city of Joensuu

Please note:

Participants must have valid insurance, as well as a backpack, basic outdoor equipment, a sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent or similar and clothing suitable for the season. Participants must be in a normal state of health. The adventure is also suitable for families with older children.
